Aluminum alloy is relatively active. Under normal atmospheric conditions, an oxide film composed of α-Al2O3 and β-Al2O3 will naturally form on the surface, but the thickness is relatively thin. This makes the aluminum alloy matrix have a certain corrosion resistance in normal atmospheric environments, neutral and weak acid solutions. However, in environments with severe pollution, high humidity, coastal atmospheric environments, and other acidic and alkaline environments, the surface oxide film is difficult to have good corrosion resistance.
Adding trace amounts of rare earth alloys to aluminum-magnesium and aluminum-manganese alloys can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys in most corrosive media. Regarding the mechanism of rare earth elements improving the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys, it is generally believed that rare earth elements can purify and refine the grains, improve the composition and uniformity of the material, and thus shift the corrosion potential positively, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys.
Surface treatment of aluminum alloy to form a conversion film on its surface is an important method to improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy. Rare earth elements can further improve the performance of the surface conversion film. Currently, there are mainly immersion treatment processes, treatment processes containing strong oxidants and film-forming promoters, cathode electrolysis processes, Baume layer treatment processes, cerium-molybdenum treatment processes and molten salt immersion processes.
