Description: Chromium is a silvery white lustrous metal. Pure chromium has ductility. Chromium containing impurities is hard and brittle, and soluble in strong alkali solution. Chromium has a high corrosion resistance, and oxidation is slow in the air, even in the state of red heat. Insoluble in water. Plated on metal for protection. Ferrochrome and silicochromium, widely used in iron and steel industry, are smelted in electric furnace. In the production of chromium, the methods of thermite reduction and electrolysis are used. Aluminothermic production includes two processes: the production of chromium oxide from chromite and the production of metal chromium from aluminum reduction chromium oxide. Generally, carbon ferrochrome is used as raw material in electrolytic production, and chrome ammonium alum method is used for electrolysis.
