Rare earth hexaborides (LaB6, CeB6, SmB6, GdB6, etc.) all have the ability of thermal electron emission. Their characteristics are compared in the figure below. Among them, lanthanum hexaboride is widely used because of its lowest work function and highest emission current density.
The bonding force between boron atoms is very strong, which makes lanthanum hexaboride have a high melting point (melting point 2210 degrees Celsius). When lanthanum hexaboride is heated to a sufficient temperature, the metal atoms on the surface evaporate, but the boron framework does not evaporate. The metal atoms inside the unit cell diffuse out and replenish the surface, minimizing the loss of surfactant.
