Due to their unique layered structure and low phonon energy of approximately 500 cm−1, rare earth oxysulfides exhibit extremely high melting points (typically 2000-2200°C) and a narrow bandgap (approximately 4.6-4.8eV). This gives them high chemical and thermal stability, making them frequently used as phosphor matrix materials. These luminescent materials, made from rare earth oxysulfides, have attracted considerable attention for their exceptional light absorption and transmission properties, and have been successfully applied in optoelectronic devices, magnetic materials, catalysts, and other fields.
Gadolinium oxysulfide (Gd2O2S, GOS) has entered people's field of vision as a new type of magnetic cold storage material. Compared with traditional magnetic materials or Pb element, GOS has a smaller density, a steeper specific heat change in the working range of 4~10K, and excellent structural strength. This enables GOS materials to achieve lower cooling effects more efficiently and has rich application prospects.
Compared to common metallic elements like lead and magnetic cold storage materials like HoCu2, Er3Ni, and ErNi, GOS is prone to hydrolysis, severely impacting its low-temperature cold storage performance. On the other hand, GOS also offers excellent compatibility as a dopant for scintillating ceramics, leading to the urgent challenge of preparing high-purity GOS powder. Scientists have systematically studied the effects of the S/Gd atomic ratio, reduction temperature, and reduction time on the purity of gadolinium oxysulfide (Gd2O2S) powder prepared by hydrothermal reduction. They found that the reduction time has the greatest impact on the purity of Gd2O2S powder, followed by the S/Gd atomic ratio, and the reduction temperature has the least impact.
