Germanium is a rare metal with the element symbol Ge. Its simple substance is a grayish-white metalloid, shiny, hard, and belongs to the carbon family. Its chemical properties are similar to those of tin and silicon in the same family. It is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid, and dilute caustic soda solutions, but soluble in aqua regia, concentrated nitric acid, or sulfuric acid. It is amphoteric, so it is soluble in molten alkali, alkali peroxide, alkali metal nitrates, or carbonates, and is relatively stable in the air.
Germanium is found in zinc sulfide and certain other sulfide ores and is primarily obtained as a by-product of zinc smelting. Most germanium is recovered as a by-product during zinc or copper refining. Germanium is also recovered from coal containing trace metals, as well as from secondary sources containing germanium.
Germanium is mainly used in infrared optics, solar cells, optical fibers, etc., among which the infrared field and optical fiber field are the main application fields. Specific applications in the infrared field include infrared optical lenses, prisms and high-transmittance glass. The global demand for clean energy continues to increase, and the demand for germanium in the solar energy field increases. With the popularization of technologies such as 5G and the Internet of Things, the demand for semiconductor devices will continue to rise, thereby driving the growth in demand for germanium. These reasons may expand the application of emerging fields, such as new energy, environmental protection, biomedicine, nuclear physics detection and other emerging fields.
