Overview of research on pharmacological activities of rare earth salts

Since the 1960s, rare earth compounds have been discovered to have a series of special pharmacological effects. Rare earth ions have been found to be excellent antagonists of Ca²⁺, with sedative and analgesic effects. They are widely used in the treatment of burns, inflammation, skin diseases, thrombosis, etc., thus attracting widespread attention.

The earliest used cerium salt, cerium oxalate, can treat marine vertigo and pregnancy vomiting, and has been listed in many pharmacopoeias. LaCl₃ may have a therapeutic effect on atherosclerosis, diabetic complications and other vascular inflammatory diseases. Ce(NO₃)₃ can be used as a local disinfectant for treating burn wounds.

La₂(CO₃)₃ is a new type of non-calcium-based phosphate binder, which is clinically used to treat chronic kidney disease. La₂(CO₃)₃ can effectively reduce the phosphate level in the blood of patients with renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. LaCl₃ and CeCl₄ can inhibit the proliferation of two types of leukemia cells and induce their apoptosis within a certain concentration range, while having no effect on the proliferation of normal bone marrow hematopoietic cells.
