As the lightest metal structural material in practical applications, magnesium alloy has the advantages of high specific strength, specific stiffness, good electromagnetic shielding and dimensional stability, and no pollution. Commonly used commercial magnesium alloys have good formability and room temperature strength, but their heat resistance is still poor. Therefore, it is necessary to develop high-strength and heat-resistant magnesium alloys to meet the needs of different usage environments.
Rare earth elements are the most effective elements for improving the heat resistance of magnesium alloys. They can reduce the number of inclusions, refine alloy grains, and form rare earth compounds or solid solution phases, thereby improving the organization and high-temperature mechanical properties of magnesium alloys. Rare earth elements have a large solid solubility in magnesium and can form a large number of Mg-RE phases with high thermal stability after aging. These Mg-RE phases can significantly improve the room temperature and high temperature strength of magnesium alloys.
The most studied rare earth magnesium alloy systems include Mg-Gd system, Mg-Y system, Mg-Nd system, etc. Compared with other rare earth elements, Ho has more obvious characteristics: (1) Ho has a higher solid solubility in magnesium; (2) Ho is mixed with other elements, and Ho is added to magnesium alloys in combination with alloying elements such as Al, Zn, Gd, and Nd. Combined with the current research progress of Ho-containing magnesium alloys, the strengthening mechanism of adding Ho to magnesium alloys can be divided into three aspects, namely, fine grain strengthening, solid solution strengthening, and precipitation strengthening.
