In the 1990s, a near-net-shape ceramic process-gelcasting-was developed. This made it possible to produce large-scale, complex-shaped Y2O3 ceramic components. In recent years, gelling materials used in gelcasting have expanded beyond acrylamide (AM) gelling systems to include isobutylene and maleic anhydride copolymer (Isobam) gelling systems and several natural gelling systems, such as alginate, gelatin, pectin, and agarose. AM and Isobam gelling systems are the most widely used.

Using nano-Y2O3 as raw material and AM gel system, Y2O3 transparent ceramics with excellent performance were successfully prepared through gel casting molding combined with vacuum sintering.
